New survey reveals Canadians aren’t consuming enough of four food groups s a dairy farmer, you know the importance of telling Canadians about the health benefits of consuming milk and milk products. However, you may be surprised to learn many Canadians aren’t reaching for that tall glass of milk as often as they should. A new study released by Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) and Dietitians of Canada revealed Canadian adults are not consuming the recommended daily servings of any of the four food groups. What’s even more surprising, several people reported not consuming any of the foods in a particular food group the day prior to the survey, nor were they aware of the health benefits of certain foods. More than 2,000 Canadian adults were surveyed in August to get an idea of what they are eating and drinking during a 24-hour period. “Most Canadians don’t seem to know about the role milk products and vegetables and fruit play in controlling blood pressure and lowering the risk of some cancers,” says Mary Sue Waisman, Dietitians of Canada’s public affairs and communications manager. “If they did, it might just help them choose additional servings of these products more often.” DFC has earmarked $18.4 million toward nutrition education in 2010. Its new Get Enough campaign, is aimed at improving under-consumption of milk and milk products among Canadian adults, particularly women 35 to 64 and all adults over 55. That was the surprising finding of a military-funded study that sought to figure out what foods were best for pilots when missions restricted when or what they could eat. University of North Dakota researchers found pilots who ate the fattiest foods, such as butter or gravy, had the quickest response times in mental tests and made fewer mistakes when flying in cloudy conditions.
