Milk Producer - March 2010 - (Page 8)
PROVINCIALPERSPECTIVES By Blaine McLeod Saskatchewan’s regulatory Évolution du paysage réglementaire landscape is changing askatchewan dairy farmers are facing what could be de la Saskatchewan considered the most significant change in decades— changes that will permanently alter our regulatory landscape. Our provincial government is currently reviewing our dairy legislation. It wants to ensure our “industry legislation and regulations are up-to-date and consistent with Saskatchewan’s new legislation and regulatory modernization standards and the province’s governing principles.” After months of discussions, we are proposing amalgamating the Milk Control Board (MCB) and Dairy Farmers of Saskatchewan (DFS). This new entity, currently called the Saskatchewan Milk Marketing Board, would oversee the MCB regulatory functions, producer and transportation standards, and DFS, including its promotion activities. We anticipate a seamless transition to a fully elected producer marketing board in the coming months, with the first elections in the fall of 2010. Producers overwhelmingly support the merger. However, there are some important guiding principles we have to consider. First, we want to control and regulate milk production and marketing in Saskatchewan. This will let us maintain a fair, stable price for our milk, and ensure all industry stakeholders benefit from a fair system. Second, our producers want to continue supporting important research initiatives. As such, we have partnered with the University of Saskatchewan to conduct ongoing research into milk production and marketing. Third, our promotion activities are another central tenet of our milk marketing board that help drive industry growth and expansion. Our continued involvement in this area is vital. Finally, in developing our milk marketing board, it is important we have all the necessary powers to fully participate in the decision-making bodies that govern our province’s milk production and marketing. We expect the proposed legislative changes will position our industry to prosper for years to come. 8 | March 2010 | MilkPRODUCER
