NEW’N’NOTED Calf hutch rear door gets makeover A new option for bedding cows Innovative 3-in-One rear door Agri-Plastics has introduced a redesigned, innovative rear door as standard equipment on all its calf hutches. The door lets you easily feed or bed calves quickly. The 3-in-One door is designed to swing up flush with the hutch, allowing for zero clearance. This creates easy access to feed with an ATV, truck or tractor. The door is easy to operate. With no latches, it snaps shut. It also features a sliding grill vent to adjust ventilation. Publication of this information does not constitute endorsement by The Milk Producer. new bedding option for dairy cattle has been introduced to Canada by an Ontario dairy equipment supplier. BeddingMaster produces safe, composted manure more economically than any previous system. It can reduce or even eliminate the need for other bedding materials such as wood shavings or sand. It also reduces the amount of effluent you have to spread on fields. Dairy Lane Systems of Komoka, Ont. brought the new system, developed by DariTech Inc. of Lynden, Wash., to Ontario last year. It has four installations underway or operational. The BeddingMaster is a rotary drum composter that converts manure into a reliable bedding source. The fully contained system operates in even the harshest climate. Scraped manure, or dewatered flush manure, from a dairy operation is fed directly into a separator specially designed by DariTech to provide the ideal feedstock for the composter, which is made up of manure solids at a minimum of 35 per cent dry matter, with 37 to 38 per cent preferred. Compost is finished and ready for immediate use in three days. Input from one cow can provide enough bedding for one and one-half to two stalls for deep beds, and will go farther on mattresses. Because of the excess material some producers won’t have to compost all the manure, or could do so and sell the excess compost as bedding or to the horticulture market. The BeddingMaster is available in three sizes: 6 x 16 feet, 6 x 32 feet and 8 x 40 feet.
