You can start CQM before rollout Y ou don’t have to wait for Ontario’s official rollout of the Canadian Quality Milk (CQM) program to have your farm validated. You can get started any time before the program becomes mandatory, says Alex Hamilton, Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO) field services and CQM manager. To get started, complete an application form available from your DFO field services representative (FSR). You can also get more information about the program by e-mailing DFO at questions@milk.org. Several volunteers, mostly dairy producer committee members, have already stepped forward to enroll in the CQM program, Hamilton says. Once DFO receives your application, your name will be added to the master list for the CQM validation process, he notes. Staff will determine whether your standard operating procedures have been completed, reviewed and returned to you in printed form. If they are complete, DFO will send you an information package on how to get started with the validation process. If not, you will receive a more complete information package. You can then go online and complete your SOPs through DFO’s website. DFO will choose an FSR to provide training—a two- to two-and-a-halfhour session. Then you start the threemonth record-keeping component. Once completed, you can go through a checklist showing whether you have met all requirements. A validation date will then be set, Hamilton says. After one year, you will complete a self-declaration form confirming you are still following the program, and have a partial validation done after three years. There is another self-declaration in the fourth year, and the full validation takes place again in year five.
