Chapman’s readies for plant opening Chapman’s Ice Cream is planning to open its new plant on Sept. 4, the one-year anniversary of a fire that destroyed the old facility in Markdale, Ont. The 161,000-square-foot plant is almost double the size of the original facility, and will cost upwards of $75 million, says owner Penny Chapman. Chapman’s previous factory burned down last September in a fire started by a welder’s torch. The company has been making its products at a nearby mini-plant. Once the new plant opens, Chapman’s will retain its 450 workers and may hire another 50 to 100 employees, says Penny. The company plans to keep its mini-plant open after the new plant is complete to process its peanut-, nutand gluten-free products. Before, Chapman’s nut-free products were manufactured in an isolated room at the old creamery.
