Valuable nutrition education
DFC evaluated its popular school-based nutrition program to determine its impact on students
D
uring the 2009-2010 school year, DFC’s registered dietitians evaluated DFC’s Power to Play! kindergarten to Grade 3 nutrition education program to determine its impact on students’ nutrition knowledge and eating habits. Results showed students who participated in the program were better at placing milk and alternative foods into the correct food group and making healthier meals and snacks. Many students said they loved the pro-
gram, understood the benefits of healthy eating and liked learning about nutrition and trying new foods in class, including milk products. Some even tried new recipes at home and had their parents buy the required ingredients, including havarti and Gouda cheese.

Sixty-three per cent noticed changes in their students’ behaviour as a result of the program. Nutrition education gives students the knowledge and skills to make healthier food choices and encourages them to include milk and milk products in their lunches and snacks. More than 5,000 Ontario teachers have received a copy of Power to Play! About 120,000 students have participated in the program so far. A new sub-channel in the website’s health section, called Mighty Milk, features articles on milk products’ benefits.
Online game re-launched

FC’s online Dairy Dash game, held for the first time this spring, was relaunched in September. Consumers can visit getenough.ca to test their nutrition and milk product knowledge for a chance to win one of two $5,000 grocery shopping sprees and a dietitian consultation. The contest ends Dec. 10 and is open to all Canadian residents. Special interactive web banners were created to promote the contest and are posted on numerous women-focused websites. 24 | November 2010 | MilkPRODUCER
