NEW’N’NOTED Product now licensed for BRD treatment Merial Canada has announced an advanced treatment of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD). Now approved for use in Canada, ZACTRAN Injectable Solution provides fastacting, long-lasting antimicrobial activity for prevention and treatment. According to recent market research, BRD remains the most costly health challenge in Canadian feedlots. Gamithromycin, the active ingredient in ZACTRAN, provides solid efficacy against BRD pathogens with just one treatment, resulting in improved health and less stress. Gamithromycin delivers proven efficacy against a broad spectrum of BRD pathogens by effectively penetrating the cell wall to inhibit protein synthesis, resulting in death of the bacteria, says Dr. Norm Machell, Merial’s technical service veterinarian. Data generated with ZACTRAN show that following a low-volume subcutaneous injection in the neck, gamithromycin is rapidly absorbed and distributed into tissues. Particularly high concentrations are achieved in the lungs just 30 minutes after injection, and persist in the lungs for at least 15 days. Available in Europe since 2008, ZACTRAN is now licensed in Canada for the treatment and prevention of BRD associated with Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni, and for the treatment of Mycoplasma bovis. Mini-mixers fill a void Jaylor mini-mixer series J aylor has introduced the new mini-mixer series with self-propelled, trailer, small flatbed truck mount and stationary models. These mixers let small herd operators feed total mixed ration (TMRs). Large herd operators can create special rations for dry and other special needs groups. “We are very proud to introduce the mini-series because they’re built with the same long life and durability design as the rest of the Jaylor product line, but with added versatility for both small herd operators and special diet needs on large herd operations,” says Jake Tamminga, Jaylor founder and president. “We were overwhelmed by the interest from small ruminant farmers. These mini-mixers will fill a void in previously available feeding systems.” The mini-series is powered by a reliable industrial Briggs and Stratton Vanguard engine, and designed to process small hay bales, forages and other ingredients. Mixers then cut and mix a consistent, nutritious TMR. The mini-series self-propelled model has an all-wheel drive, hydrostatic drive system which allows the mixer to be easily manoeuvred in tight alley ways. The mini-series is also available in a stationary electric-drive system and a self-powered trailer option easily towed by utility vehicles, such as ATVs and larger garden tractors.
