THEBACKFORTY By Sharon Laidlaw Creative concept Ontario dairy farmer gets hockey goalie helmet redesigned with DFC’s Get a Load of Milk logo, cow motif hen he isn’t tending to his 230-cow herd or managing the biodigester on his farm, dairy farmer Glenn Green is sporting an innovative, eye-catching mask while tending goal for a men’s hockey team in Kingston, Ont. Combining his love for sport and the farm, Glenn’s most recent creation started with an idea to refurbish an old beat-up goalie mask. With a bit of elbow grease, new padding and a refinished surface, Glenn’s mask is truly a work of art. It features stars, a cow motif and even Dairy Farmers of Canada’s (DFC) Get a Load of Milk logo painted across the front. “I really liked how the cow bursts through the DFC Get a Load of Milk logo and how the bell rings at the end of the commercial. I wanted to replicate that on my mask,” says Glenn. The mask (pictured at right) was painted by well-known artist Frank Cipra, from Brockville Ont. Cipra has been professionally painting boats, bikes, cars, trailers, guitars and hockey masks since 1980. He has created unique looks for many goalies, including Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr and former Maple Leaf great Curtis Glenn Green’s hockey helmet is painted with DFC’s Get a Load of Milk logo. 46 | May 2011 | MilkPRODUCER W Joseph, as well as many other NHL stars. According to Glenn, it took Frank about a week to design and lay out the mask, although he supplied the concept. The stars are made of chrome for extra shine, while the rest of the mask is hand painted and airbrushed. Depending on how much detail is involved, a typical mask can cost $700 to $1,200. “This mask definitely gets some looks, on and off the ice,” says Glenn. “The odd referee thinks it’s pretty cool as well.” The mask also features the Ledge- croft Farm logo, designed by one of Glenn’s friends, Darren Young. “I like the modern look of the farm logo and think it’s cool to be proud and represent my family farm,” says Glenn. “I also like to pay tribute to family members by printing their names on my masks. This one has the name of my aunt, Mary, who passed away in 2003.” A co-owner in the family farm in Seeley’s Bay, Ont., Glenn never knew the masks would garner so much attention. “I never set out to accomplish anything by putting the DFC logo on my mask. I just thought it was a creative idea and looked good.”
