EDITOR’SNOTES By Bill Dimmick A few more ﬁrsts Talented Nova Scotians teamed up to help us bring you the story and photos of a CQM accomplishment O how Nova Scotia managed to become the first province to have all its dairy farmers registered in the Canadian Quality Milk (CQM) program. This story also marks a few firsts for our magazine. When I read about the Maritime province’s accomplishment several months ago, I thought the details would interest our readers across Canada. To make it a good cover story, I would require a dependable writer and a top-notch photographer. It seemed only fitting to find talented Nova Scotians who could do the job. For the writing, I turned to Dan Woolley, a long-time agricultural writer based in Truro, N.S. Over the past several years, Dan has regularly contributed to The Milk Producer. He has filed reports on issues ranging from the court challenge to the Dairy Farmers of Nova Scotia (DFNS) quota policy to the Farmers Dairy initiative that featured producers on product packaging and other promotions. A valued contributor, Dan knows the industry, the good folks at DFNS and many of the province’s producers. He leapt at the opportunity to write the article—his first cover story for us. As for the photography, let’s call it serendipity. In July 2010, I was covering the Dairy Farmers of Canada annual meeting in Halifax. During a break in the meeting, the producers who sit on DFC’s promotion committee were to be photographed with the President’s Choice mobile ice cream parlour. I wandered outside with them to observe the shoot, planning to snap some photos, too. The photographer, Kirk Saint, was set up and ready to go. I eyed his top-of-the-line equipment, and just as importantly watched him interact with the people he was shooting. Our regular contributing photographer, David Barr, has always impressed with the special way he handles both his camera and people. Kirk impressed me in the same way. After he finished the shoot, I asked him if he would have a problem taking his expensive equipment into a dairy barn. Not at all, he replied. I suggested we might have some work for him in future. Kirk operates his business, Unique Images, out of Salmon River, N.S., not far from Truro. Once we decided to go with the CQM cover story, I contacted him and, like Dan, he eagerly accepted the assignment, his first for The Milk Producer. All the Nova Scotians involved in this story deserve to take a bow. However, other provinces have earned a pat on the back, too. As of March 3, DFC reported Alberta had just one producer awaiting registration, while Manitoba and New Brunswick were getting really close to hitting the 100 per cent mark. Kudos to all.
