Dairy Farmers of Ontario teams up with small-scale processors to market products from specific herds
ith support from Ontario’s Rural Economic Development Program, Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO) has teamed up with five dairy companies across the province to create and market dairy products made with milk from specific cattle. Known as Project Origin, the joint venture between DFO and the five dairy producing and processing businesses will also help gauge demand for dairy products made with milk from specific cattle herds. Sourcing milk from specific herds will make it easier for Ontarians to find out where and how their food was made and help strengthen the companies’ positions in local food markets, according to Ontario Agriculture Minister Carol Mitchell. “More and more, people want to know where their food comes from and how it’s made,” she says. “By sourcing milk from specific herds of cattle, this innovative project will do just that. We’re proud to partner with DFO to bring high-quality, fresh and local dairy products to Ontarians, opportunities to local farmers and strength to our agri-food sector.” DFO vice-chair David Murray says the project could not have come at a better time as interest among consumers about the origin of their food continues to increase. 10 | October 2011 | MilkPRODUCER

The two artisan cheese processors are participating in Project Origin. “Thanks to the support we’re receiving through the Rural Economic Development Program, we’re helping five farm operations take the step to become on-farm processors,” Murray says. “This will help to expand the market for high-quality, locallyproduced Ontario milk and cheeses.” Among the five companies involved in the project, two will be pasteurizing and bottling milk on-farm from their own dairy herds for sale to consumers—a first for Ontario.
