PROVINCIALPERSPECTIVES By Reg Perry Our industry’s future depends on our efforts L’avenir de notre industrie dépend de nos efforts A s I followed the local, regional and national weather reports over the summer, I got the distinct .impression Mother Nature was trying to show us she had ultimate control over our destiny. Although it seems as though we have little control over factors affecting our supply management system, such as World Trade Organization talks, border control measures, the growing influence of international companies and increasing public pressure on various fronts, we have the power to improve how our supply management system works. A good example is how we adapted to various changes and pressures by establishing a P5 pooling agreement and the Western milk pool. These models have served us well and helped us settle many differences. However, they have their drawbacks. They are cumbersome and do not let us meet our present and future challenges effectively. When all 10 provinces came together on Sept. 1 to look at ways of adapting our system so we can better share the benefits and risks associated with our industry, it was a good first step. I hope we can continue to work collectively in the coming months to strengthen Canada’s supply management system. I believe our supply management system is weathering a storm of its own right now. The future of our industry depends on us creating an environment that encourages increased demand for milk and dairy products for the benefit of all dairy farmers and processors. Mother Nature may be able to control the weather, but we can control how our industry evolves now and in the future. 8 | October 2011 | MilkPRODUCER
