idely used technology and management practices such as total mixed rations, sand bedding and parallel parlours were once considered leading-edge innovations. Many Ontario dairy farmers, and a few from other provinces, got their first exposure to these ideas from an organization now known as Progressive Dairy Operators. In 1982, an informal volunteer committee helped put together a conference that brought a wealth of new knowledge and ideas to Ontario for managing freestall operations. That committee grew to become today’s PDO, an organization that wants to share its educational philosophy with all Canadian producers. Numbering almost 500 members, PDO mostly focuses on organizing tours and conferences. The aim is providing dairy farmers with
