MARKETS Yogurt sales still growing D espite the media buzz it has generated and projected sales potential, Greek-style yogurt does not have stranglehold on the Canadian market just yet, according to recent figures from the AC Nielson retail sales survey. The figures show Greek-style yogurt sales grew by an astounding 702 per cent in Canada during the 12 months ending March 10, 2012, compared with the same period one year earlier. However, Greek-style yogurt made up just 5.2 per cent of overall yogurt sales. As a whole, category sales grew 1.7 per cent during the period. Major yogurt brands are now selling Greek-style yogurt in Canada, and the leading U.S. brand, Chobani, has proposed plans to build a plant near Kingston, Ont. Agro-Farma, the company that makes Chobani, has been importing its yogurt from the U.S. under a supplementary import permit for test marketing in the Greater Toronto Area. Legal procedures and appeals surrounding Agro-Farma’s plans are ongoing. Yogurt production across Canada uses an estimated 320 million litres of milk annually—about four per cent of the total national production of 7.5 billion litres.
