THEBACKFORTY By Sharon Laidlaw Reduce your risk New study suggests eating more low-fat milk products may lower your chance of dying from a stroke ou probably do a good job of taking care of your health, such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting plenty of sleep. However, if you’re interested in preventing a stroke, a new study reveals eating more low-fat dairy products may help you accomplish that goal. According to a Swedish study, eating low-fat milk products may help lower the risk of middle-aged and older adults having a stroke. Researchers tracked the diets of 75,000 men and women, aged 45 to 83, for an average of 10 years after they had completed a dietary questionnaire. They Y Vitamin D and calcium may play a role in loewring blood pressure. Britons wasting milk raise their carbon footprint B ritons who continue to pour milk down their drains are raising their carbon footprint, instead of lowering it. According to a study conduct- ed at the University of Edinburgh, about 360,000 tonnes of milk is poured down British kitchen sinks, contributing to a carbon footprint equivalent to the exhaust emissions of 20,000 cars annually, or 100,000 tonnes of CO2. found those who consumed the most low-fat milk products were 12 per cent less likely to have a stroke compared to those who consumed full-fat products. During the 10-year period, more than 4,000 of the 75,000 people followed had suffered a stroke. Vitamin D and calcium may play a role in lowering blood pressure, says neurologist Wayne Clark, director of the Oregon Stroke Center at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore. Dairy Herd Network reported similar findings of other studies, including one in the United Kingdom in 2009. It found a correlation between drinking milk and reducing the risk of dying from heart disease or stroke. Another U.K. study in 2005 found milk drinkers had a 17 per cent lower stroke risk. The Swedish researchers called for further large studies to examine the association and determine what implications it could have on public health. The findings were published in the journal Stroke.
