FROM THE FOUNDER ON THE ROOF WITH… TEN YEARs PAss — IN THE BLINk OF AN EYE W ow! It was ten years ago and spring in Chicago when more than 400 people first gathered from across North America and around the world to share information and conduct business in the fledging green roof industry. Now ten years later, we are planning to gather in October in Chicago, the queen of green roof cities with more than 5 million square feet installed. We will celebrate our many personal and collective successes, conduct business and forge important plans and strategies to secure the industry’s future growth and prosperity. CitiesAlive in Chicago will be a watershed event, in terms of looking back on what has worked and what has not, and for making important plans for the future. As the industry grows rapidly, it inevitably attracts new players, some of whom may not have the skills, knowledge and standard of care as the early adopters. The Living Architecture Performance Tool program focuses on developing the framework and underlying metrics that will build on our scientific understanding of living architecture and the remarkable amount of field experience stretching from Alaska to Puerto Rico. The Performance Tool will help us design better projects and products in order to maximize the public and private benefits of green roofs and walls. It will also provide the basis for a better relationship to the USGBC’s LEED products, Sustainable Sites, the Living Building Challenge and other voluntary green building and landscaping rating systems and may support product testing and certification. At CitiesAlive in Chicago a first draft framework will be unveiled and there will be ample opportunities for you to join in on these important discussions. At CitiesAlive, through our Awards of Excellence program we will recognize design, installation, research and advocacy leadership within our industry. For our 10th Anniversary, we will also recognize more than 50 leaders who have contributed significantly, year after year, to the development of the green roof and wall industry through business, academia, and politics. During the Trade Show, there will be a very special book signing of The Rise of Living Architecture: Commemorative Edition which contains the insights of many of the industry leaders and their thoughts about the future of the industry. We’ve invited more than fifty experts to join us to sign special copies of the book, sure to become an instant collectors’ item. The Rise of Living Architecture: Commemorative Edition is an historical marker in the rapid evolution of this industry. To further mark the occasion of our Anniversary, this issue of the Living Architecture Monitor™ is our Commemorative Edition. It charts some of the major achievements over the past 10 years and provides an opportunity to reflect on what has passed, seemingly in the blink of an eye.
