OSPE - The Voice - Fall 2013 - (Page 25)

OSPE INVITED TO ELLIOT LAkE INQUIRY ROUNDTABLE As a follow-up to the Inquiry into the tragic structural collapse of the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake on June 23, 2012, OSPE has been invited to take part in a Roundtable discussion November 20-21 on "The Role of Professionals and Other Building Consultants." Comprised of representative from Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO), Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) and Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT), the Roundtable will seek opinions about the role of these professionals in the inspection of buildings, property standards, and training and qualifications of building officials. Last year, OSPE was granted standing on the Elliot Lake Inquiry. As the advocate for Ontario's engineers, OSPE sought to use this opportunity to monitor reasons for the collapse and to provide input on any policy changes, new regulations and procedures resulting from the inquiry. Any such changes could potentially affect a large number of professional engineers in the province, including OSPE members. While OSPE was not required to stand as a witness, we reviewed evidence and transcripts of witness accounts. OSPE remains committed to ensuring that the expertise of professional engineers is leveraged in the shaping of new policies and procedures. OSPE is now pleased to participate in the invitation-only Roundtable, speaking on behalf of our members and the engineering profession as a whole. OSPE will use this opportunity to highlight the critical role engineers and engineering play in ensuring public safety and the need to ensure that engineers have a strong voice on related policy issues. We look forward to working with PEO, OAA and OACETT to provide engineering insights and expertise to guide the writing of the final report from the Inquiry.
