AN ENGINEER OF INFLUENCE TOM ANSELMI, P.ENG. As former Chief Operating Officer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE), Tom Anselmi had a very clear mission: to win championships and captivate Canadians. In this role, he oversaw business operations for some of Canada's most popular sports franchises, including the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), TM Toronto Raptors (NBA), Toronto FC (MLS) and Toronto Marlies (AHL). Leveraging his background in engineering and business, Tom established himself as an accomplished sports and entertainment executive. From sales and marketing to corporate and community relations; from facility design and management to club operations, his ability to think as an engineer has helped propel his success in virtually all facets of the industry. "I was always interested in building, architecture, design and construction," Tom says. "I was working in construction in Saskatchewan, and an engineering degree seemed like a smart move to accelerate my capability and my career. Engineering taught me how to think strategically and analytically, how to solve problems, how to communicate solutions." Tom first joined MLSE in 1996, with a focus on spearheading the development of Air Canada Centre, home of the Leafs and Raptors. Drawing on his civil engineering knowledge, he oversaw management of the design and construction program, as well as the entertainment programs for the Opening Ceremonies for Air Canada Centre and the Closing Ceremonies of historic Maple Leaf Gardens. He was appointed President in 2012, leading the senior management team that has grown MLSE into a global leader in the industry. Prior to joining the Leafs organization, Tom was Vice President and General Manager of Arena Operations for Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment (now Canucks Sports & Entertainment) in Vancouver. He spent a number of years at Toronto's SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) during the development of the facility and throughout its initial operating phases and has since consulted on several sports and entertainment projects internationally. "Business is a lot of things, but solving problems, using good judgment and being a great leader are critical," Tom notes. "Engineering is a solid foundation for all of that." Outside the world of sports, Tom is a recognized community leader. He is actively involved with the MLSE Foundation and a member of the Board of Covenant House, a Canadian agency for homeless youth. He has served as a Vice-Chair of the Toronto Board of Trade and was an original Board member of KidSport Canada, among many community initiatives. Tom is also a passionate supporter of Canada's military and a member of Canada Company, a charitable organization that builds relationships between business and community leaders and the Canadian Military. As a leader of Team Canada, he made five goodwill trips to Afghanistan, accompanying the Leafs Alumni to visit Canadian troops situated in the region. In 2011, Tom received the Chief of Defence Staff Commendation, the highest military honour awarded to a civilian. In 2012, he received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his far-reaching community service. Tom earned his Engineering Degree (Civil) from the University of Saskatchewan, after graduating from Ryerson University. He has received Alumni Awards of Distinction from both the University of Saskatchewan and Ryerson University for accomplishments in the Sports and Entertainment Industry. In 2012, he was inducted into the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. On October 22, Tom Anselmi was featured as the latest speaker in OSPE's Engineers of Influence event series.
