OSPE - The Voice - Summer 2013 - (Page 11)

With many employers looking to hire graduates with demonstrated involvement in activities outside the classroom, the Student Ambassador Program provides students with a valuable addition to their resume. OSPE hopes to see the same recognition put in place at other schools. As the advocacy body for engineers across Ontario, OSPE is here to provide students with essential support — while they are in school and throughout their professional life. OSPE offers valuable scholarships, memberonly job postings, savings programs and numerous opportunities for students to connect with professionals, peers and employers. Learn more about the many benefits of OSPE Student Membership for both undergraduate and graduate students. Visit www.ospe.on.ca/students and join today! If you are an engineering student at a CEABaccredited university in Ontario and would like to become an OSPE Student Ambassador at your school, contact Alina Oprea at aoprea@ ospe.on.ca to learn how you can get involved. STuDENT AMBASSADOR PROfILE: SEYEDALI AGhAhOSSEINI OSPE Student Ambassador Seyedali Aghahosseini is a PhD Candidate, Mechanical Engineering, at the university of Ontario Institute of Technology (uOIT) in Oshawa. his work in the Clean Energy Research Laboratory (CERL) focuses on sustainable energy development and advanced clean hydrogen production. CERL is home to the first lab-scale demonstration of a Copper-Chlorine (Cu-Cl) cycle for thermochemical water splitting and nuclear hydrogen production. The provincial government contributed $3 million to support the development of the lab and to help uOIT develop its capacity in hydrogen technology research. The CERL houses externally funded research projects valued at more than $5.5 million, including $1.78 million from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation and $485,000 from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, among others. “My research at uOIT is focused on overcoming one of the most important challenges associated with the Cu-Cl cycle, which is system integration of unit operations,” Seyedali explains. “It is specifically focused on experimental work on fabrication of small-scale electrolysis process of the Cu-Cl cycle.” The Cu-Cl cycle could eventually be linked with Canada’s nuclear reactors to achieve significantly higher efficiencies and lower costs of large-scale hydrogen production than any conventional technology. The project involves a multi-disciplinary team of researchers from other institutions including university of Toronto, university of Guelph and university of Western Ontario. Seyedali obtained a full scholarship for his project from the Ontario Research fund (ORf), as well as assistance from Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). he has made innovative contributions to the research and development of sustainable energy technologies and their implementation, multi-generation energy systems, heat integration, and exergy and energy analysis. he has published several papers in scientific journals and presented at international conferences. He was also awarded the Dean’s Graduate Scholarship from uOIT. Students get an inside look at Bombardier’s Downsview facility in Toronto TheVoice Summer 2013 1 1 http://www.ospe.on.ca/students
