AdVoCACy In ACtIon ENGINEERS AS LEADERS Members explore issues, voice concerns at OSPE General Assembly OSPE relies on member input to help set policy and strategic direction. On May 7, 2013 OSPE’s biennial General Assembly (GA) brought members together to learn from speakers, discuss advocacy priorities, voice their concerns and share their ideas around the theme of “Engineers as Leaders.” OSPE CEO Mark Dietrich opened the day’s events with a talk on the results of OSPE’s 2013 Issues Survey. While this research explored several issue areas, the results confirmed that boosting visibility, respect and appreciation for engineers and the work that they do remains OSPE members’ highest advocacy priority. Respondents also noted that demonstrating engineers’ high levels of competency and integrity is critical. GA attendees chose from three breakout sessions exploring how engineers are demonstrating leadership in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship and public policy develop- 2 0 TheVoice Summer 2013 ment. In partnership with McMaster University’s Centre for Engineering and Public Policy, OSPE highlighted the importance of engineering input in a panel session entitled “Engineers at the Policy Table.” Speakers noted that engineers must be involved in policy making to ensure that political vision and technical realities match up. On the flip side, engineers must be in tune with community needs when they develop policies and solutions. In a session on “Engineers as Entrepreneurs,” presenters discussed the concept of “engipreneurship.” Presenters discussed how engineers’ perseverance and problem-solving
