TALKING TRANSIT: GOVERNMENTS SHOW INTEREST IN OSPE REPORT
In the Fall 2013 issue of The Voice, OSPE reported
on the release of a new report entitled The TTC
Relief Line: Let's Get the Engineering on Track!
Authored by members of OSPE's Infrastructure Task Force,
the report offered an independent engineering review of
studies related to the proposed Toronto Transit Commission
(TTC) subway Relief Line (RL). The report was circulated to
city officials, Toronto-based MPPs and relevant ministries, a
move that opened the door to several high profile meetings
At the provincial level, OSPE met with Ontario's Minister of
Transportation, the Hon. Glen Murray, to brief him on the
report. OSPE CEO Mark Dietrich and OSPE Infrastructure Task
Force member Bill Lardner, P.Eng., met with Toronto Mayor
Rob Ford and TTC CEO Andy Byford, along with four other
City of Toronto and TTC executives, to discuss OSPE's report.
OSPE also met with Toronto City Councillors Kristyn WongTam, Denzil Minnan-Wong and Josh Matlow. OSPE is actively
pursuing meetings with other municipal leaders.
with elected officials wishing to further discuss OSPE's insight
into transit issues within Canada's largest urban centre.
OSPE's study underscored that the benefits of extending
Toronto's Bloor-Danforth subway line into Scarborough in
Toronto's east end could be severely undermined by a
substantial increase in commuter congestion unless a new
relief line is also put in place. Currently 520,000 people use
the Bloor-Danforth line daily, with 85,000 transferring to the
Yonge-University Line at Bloor-Yonge Station. The relief line
would improve transit access from Scarborough to the
downtown core, ease southbound congestion on the Yonge

ALBERT SCHEPERS, P.ENG
The work of OSPE's Political Action Network (PAN)
is central to raising the profile of engineers in Ontario.
The success of this grassroots initiative hinges on the
participation of dedicated professional engineers like
Albert Schepers, P.Eng., who volunteer their time to
meet with elected officials in their local communities,
keeping them informed and up to date on engineeringrelated issues. Albert helps spread the OSPE message
to policy influencers in the riding of Windsor West. Having established himself
as a go-to expert on all matters related to the building industry and building
code, Albert has also represented OSPE on the Ontario Building Code Advisory
Committee and, more recently, on the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs
and Housing's Expert Advisory Panel on Requirements for Outdoor Temporary
Stages. Many thanks, Albert, for your contributions to OSPE and dedication
to your profession!
