OSPE - The Voice - June 2018 - 20

COVER

Anselm Viswasam, P.Eng., Hyperion, has
developed a ground-breaking sensing
solution for high voltage electrical assets
like transformers, so for the first time ever,
utilities have access to real time analytics
about the health and status of their multibillion-dollar equipment.

DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE
AN ENGINEER?
I don't know where it started, as a youngster I had an intense
curiosity. I was always looking for answers to questions, I
never really knew that I was going to be an engineer - but
I'm sure glad that I am because I've been able to create,
and it's always kept me energized and excited.
TELL US ABOUT HOW YOUR SCHOOLING PREPARED
YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO TODAY?
Out of school I joined General Electric where I really cut my
teeth and I learned that school was just a starting point and
that the real world was a whole different place. IT was an
eye-opener when I first started, I wasn't sure what I was in
for and it was tough, but I loved it because it prepared me
for everything in life. One of the things I appreciate most
about engineering is that I never looked at a problem with
any fear - it took away the fear.
HOW CAN YOU APPLY THAT TO WHAT YOU'RE
DOING TODAY?
What we're doing at Hyperion today - people will ask me,
'how come?' Really at the end of the day it's because we
are fearless - we're not afraid to do something that's never
been done. That all comes from the engineering mindset
of looking at a problem and thinking about how you can
slice it and dice it and how do you make it happen.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPANY
Hyperion specializes in developing a solution that brings
data back from the assets that comprise the power grid.
The idea is that you are able to put eyes inside of an asset
and be able to bring that information back to the rest of
the world. For example, Hydro One has generators and
transformers that produce and generate power, and in
laymen's terms we've developed something called a sensor
that brings information from deep within the epicenter of
these assets back to the operator.

THE VOICE

June 2018

"I am very proud to be an engineer
because I get to contribute. I know
that what I do will be of meaningful value
to a lot of people in this world and that's
what drives me day in and day out."

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM THAT YOU'RE TRYING
TO SOLVE?
In some sense, and I say this in a facetious way, it's ignorance.
We have these very large assets that are high voltage and
high current and it is very difficult to get information from
deep inside of them. However, as the world is changing,
it's becoming more and more important that we bring that
information back. Hyperion has developed a solution that
allows us to put a pair of eyes inside of these assets, where
no one has gone before, to bring data back.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE IN
YOUR ROLE?
A typical day for me is actually a typical engineers day - it's a
complete unknown. You walk in and you have no idea what
it's going to be like. And that's typical of an entrepreneur.
We're developing a new technology, things don't always
go the way that you want them to. So every day is a new
day in every sense of the word. I'm always pleased to be
an engineer because what I really bring to the table is the
problem solving and the skills and the fearlessness to be
able to tackle all of those problems on a daily basis.
