CAREERS Do Newcomers to Canada Face Barriers in Obtaining Work? THE CENSUS SAYS, YES A s reported in the December 2018 issue of The Voice, according to the 2016 Canada Census, in Ontario only 32 per cent of men and 22 per cent of women with engineering degrees are actually employed in engineering positions. Furthermore, 36 per cent of those men and 38 per cent of women work in jobs not necessarily requiring a degree ((referred to by OSPE as underemployment)) - a disturbing fact that indicates many Ontarians may not be utilizing the knowledge and skills obtained by at least four years of university education. These statistics, however, do not convey the full story - that finding engineering work appears correlated to whether one obtained their degree in Canada or outside Canada. Assuming that most individuals with a degree conferred outside Canada are immigrants, Canada's newcomers are not faring well compared to their counterparts with Canadian degrees.
