STUDENTS

Creating Programs for the Future and
Job-ready Engineering Graduates at
Conestoga College

C

onestoga is the only college in Ontario offering engineering programs that are
accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board - its graduates
meet the education requirements to become professional engineers. From Building
Systems and Electronic Systems to Power Systems Engineering, Conestoga's programs
involve project-based learning and co-ops that prepare students for successful careers
in engineering. Small class sizes and dedicated workspaces as well as opportunities
for applied research make the learning experience incredibly unique.
Conestoga's Mechanical Systems Engineering degree program, for example, is built
on the project-based learning model - or "learn by doing". This method enhances the
retention of theoretical knowledge by associating it with its applications in real life.
The program is based on:
* One 8-month project in each year of study
* Real world problems
* A third-year project, unique each year, developed in partnership with industry,
involving building and testing what has been designed
* Students work in teams, but are evaluated individually
* Students interact with the end user and learn responsibility
"Our students obtain employment within six months of graduation to a proportion
of 100 per cent - it's definitely working well," said Calin Stoicoiu, P.Eng., one of two
Chairs of the School of Engineering and Technology at Conestoga College. "We put
an emphasis on exposing students to the high aspects of engineering, extending into
the practical application of the knowledge through project-based learning. They are
job ready - that's the advantage. They start to produce results right away."
An important aspect of Conestoga's ability to ensure its graduates are job-ready
is its use of program advisory committees (PACs). PACs are made up of employers,
school board representatives, government officials and industry experts who meet
two to three times a year to exchange information and have discussions that assist
college staff and faculty in understanding industry needs to better train a qualified and
