MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENT AND CHAIR

I am very excited to begin my role as
President & Chair of OSPE.
With the release of our new Strategic
Plan Engineering the Future Together,
OSPE is heading down a path of
transformative change.
In the past, engineers have embraced the notion that we serve the public. With
Engineering the Future Together, we are positioning the association and our
members to lead critical conversations and shape public policy on complex
issues related to engineering. Whether it is embracing and understanding new
technologies like artificial intelligence and nanotechnology, or addressing climate
change, carbon pricing, and the use and reuse of scarce resources, engineers
must be at the forefront.
I believe that having an engineering organization that engages government
and takes the lead in starting evidence-based discussions is critical. OSPE is
that organization. We advocate that engineers must share our expertise with all
levels of government to ensure that sound policy solutions, based on technical
expertise, are developed and implemented in Ontario, and across Canada.
We've made great progress over the last four years. Engage, Amplify, Excel was
the plan OSPE needed to invigorate Ontario's diverse and powerful engineering
community and establish the association as an impartial third voice and trusted
advisor to government, partners and stakeholders.
Last fall, we hosted our annual Claudette-MacKay Lassonde Fall Forum in
Ottawa to discuss barriers facing women in STEM that welcomed 800 male and
female attendees from engineering companies, faculties and government agencies
such as the Department of National Defence and Transport Canada, to name
a few. On June 18, 2019, we are following up on 2018's It's Time We Act event
with It's Time We Build, which is being hosted in Kitchener and will discuss the
difference between mentorship and sponsorship while attendees from industry,
government and academia work together to come up with actionable solutions
to help women succeed in engineering. This fall, we'll be hosting The Equity,
Diversity and Inclusion Imperative in Ottawa. OSPE will work to bring even better
benefits and services to our members. For example, one new tangible benefit for
OSPE members only is access to obtaining a Certified Professional Engineering
Management (CPEM) or Certified Associate Engineering Management (CAEM)
designation. Our members now have an engineering-specific management
certification that is not just a generic designation open to anyone. For more

I look forward to meeting you at upcoming OSPE events including roundtables,
socials and more, and hope you will continue to be engaged as we embark on
an exciting year ahead.
