STUDENTS

By participating in projects that cross
disciplinary boundaries, students learn
to work with others that come from a
completely different background than
them, which better mimics the dynamic
of a real work environment, in addition
to acquiring skills and knowledge
from other fields. Projects like these
benefit engineering students as well as
students from other faculties, but they
are also crucial when it comes to finding
solutions to major world problems, as
Jacques Beauvais emphasizes: "It's not
desirable at all to leave behind our
depth of knowledge in disciplinary
areas, but it is essential that we be able
to easily and more efficiently connect
those skills, knowledge, and expertise to
society's problems in order to increase
our impact. To do so, interdisciplinary
work is vital since real-world problems
did not occur in a manner that respects
our relatively arbitrary academic
boundaries. Whether it's bringing in
creativity, a better understanding of
cultural issues, of policies and legal
frameworks, of business strategies, etc.,
interdisciplinary work is in fact simply
real-world problem solving."
INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS

Another part of the vision for the
STEM Complex involves working
closer with industry partners. With
equipment and facilities that are up-todate with today's technology, the STEM
Complex enhances the ways that the
faculty can partner up with industry to
work on common projects. "Industry
partners bring us the most relevant
problems that need to be addressed,
and in some sectors, the state-of-theart in knowledge is in industry rather
than in academia, which makes these
partnerships absolutely vital for us to
remain at the leading edge in research
and training," Beauvais said.
For students, industry partnerships
are as exciting as they are beneficial.
Since they are working on real projects,
brought to them by real clients, they
are motivated to make an impact and
to develop solutions that are both
