functional and practical. For example,
last year, a team of students invented a
calming virtual reality retreat for cancer
patients undergoing treatment at the
Ottawa General Hospital, and another
team worked with the Ottawa Police to
develop better forensics investigation
tools.
By working for real clients, students
also gain professional experience and
insight on the way industry works - they
have to participate in meetings, meet
deadlines and expectations, and design
solutions that will be profitable to their
client. It is important for engineers
to develop professional skills, such as
communication and time management,
outside of technical skills. "We are
equipping students, through the projects
that they conduct individually or in teams,
in partnership with real world customers,
with the tools they need to be effective
and efficient future professionals," said
Beauvais. The STEM Complex enhances
opportunities for students to work with
industry partners, ensuring they are ready
for the job market when they graduate.

The true intention of the STEM Complex is to bring together the dynamism and
excitement of students of all faculties, of industry partners and of the community
around finding solutions that have a real impact on people worldwide.

The innovative ideas and the collaborations
fostered through the STEM Complex
is fuelling research on campus as well.
uOttawa's Faculty of Engineering centres
its research around five major themes:
* Enabling technologies for health care
and augmented life;
* Technology for digital transformation
of society;
* Sustainable and resilient infrastructure;
* Emerging materials and processes,
design and development and
* Photonics for devices, networks and
energy.

By participating in projects that
cross disciplinary boundaries,
students learn to work with others
that come from a completely
different background than them,
which better mimics the dynamic
of a real work environment.
