COVID-19:
Engineers Adapting
to a New Reality
he COVID-19 pandemic has impacted industries
globally, disrupting supply chains, budgets, and
operations. Like other professions, the engineering
community has been severely impacted by the
pandemic, as thousands of engineering jobs directly
linked to infrastructure, manufacturing, technology and the
research and innovation sectors temporarily ceased, affecting the
entire Ontario economy. While many of these activities resumed
earlier this summer, the uncertainty caused by the virus and the
possibility for a second wave has many concerned for the future.
Employers are working to maintain the safety of their employees,
restructure their companies, rethink their supply chains, and
adopt new technologies. Meanwhile, employees must adapt to
new ways of working and creating work-life integration without
compromising their health and overall wellbeing.
Our members have shared some of the ways in which the
pandemic has impacted their own lives. Some are parents or
parental figures, carefully balancing their childcare responsibilities
with their work commitments, others are leaders, understanding
how to motivate their teams virtually, while others are new
graduates, struggling to find meaningful work to kick start their
careers. It has been a challenging time for many, but others have
found opportunities for positive change. Here is what some of our
