COVID-19 has coincided with one of the largest
changes in our lives: in the year 2020,
44 zettabytes of data will be stored online, and
50 billion devices will be linked to the internet.
time and place, virtual learning can be provided through modules
to be accessed anytime, anywhere. This can be as simple as
pre-recorded lectures or video clips, or more dynamic learning
strategies through mobile apps and the like.
By utilizing mobile apps, companies also plug in to a key driver
of knowledge retention, as new research proves that learning in
short "chunks" allows for greater retention of information than
longer sessions of learning. By accessing shorter modules on a
consistent basis, students and employees develop a lifelong habit
of learning integrated into their daily lifestyle, in a way that
accommodates them.
The development of technology has also led to the relief
of factors such as social anxiety. Whereby in a classroom
setting participation is guided by "raising your hand,"
and speaking aloud in front of 30+ peers, online students
are able to chat, email, and even provide video/audio
input to their lecturers according to their ability. This
engages a wide variety of student types and ensures
education has a broader reach. Beyond this, active learning is a
key component of the virtual world, as there are a multitude of
ways for students to engage and receive immediate feedback from
their supervisors.
WFH and the ongoing shift to digitalization has many barriers
to overcome before it is fully widespread. However, the statistics
are clear that this transformation has been occurring for decades,
and COVID-19 may be the final accelerator it needs to become the
"new normal." Virtual learning is a vital tool in the online pivot of
our society, one that opens many possibilities for wider innovation
and restructuring.
