PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I am incredibly proud to be a member of the
Ontario Society of Professional Engineers
and be chosen as President & Chair at such a
transformational time for our profession, province
and society as a whole.
While spending over a year
social
distancing and going in and out of
lockdowns, we've learned invaluable
lessons about recalibrating and being
better prepared for the future.
As an engineer who grew up in a farming
community outside of Sudbury, I have
always been interested in solving problems.
From a young age, I was aware of the iron
ring and what it represented - people who
wore it were trusted and respected leaders
in the community. That realization is part
of the reason why I made the decision to
become an engineer.
With more than 30 years of experience
in the mining industry in Ontario and
globally, I have seen the importance of
engineering grow and evolve. From the
erection of superstacks in the 1970s,
Sudbury is now a global benchmark for best
practices in rehabilitation and sustainable
mining. In fact, representatives from
mining companies all over the world
travel to northern Ontario to witness
what the industry has accomplished with
the intent of transforming the mining
industry globally. Through environmental
and process engineering, we've become
better stewards of our resources and our
environment. While there are still some
scars from the past, Sudbury itself is now
a green city of lakes.
As President of OSPE, I hope to apply

my understanding of what individual
engineers in Ontario need - no matter
where you live or what industry you
are involved in - to make our advocacy
association better for each of us. I believe
that all engineers should become members,
because OSPE provides a forum where a
single voice can be joined with others to
make it a shout for the changes needed to
make our communities a better place for
everyone.
With our profession at the crux of
transformation, we need that collective
voice now more than ever. Continuing
professional development is finally
becoming mandatory for licence holders,
and additional regulatory transformation
is required. Just as important is the rallying
cry of for diversity, inclusion and equal
opportunity, which needs to be heard by all.
I am committed to guiding OSPE
through these essential changes. I feel it
is my responsibility to give back and leave
the world and my community in a better
place than how I found it - I learned this
growing up on the land and continue to
foster this value. The OSPE membership
and Board of Directors will be renewing
our Strategic Plan in 2021. I ask that
everyone be a part of this and contribute
to help solidify our vision to truly make our
chosen profession and OSPE the best it can
be for everybody.
I believe that all engineers
should become members,
because OSPE provides a
forum where a single voice
can be joined with others
to make it a shout for the
changes needed to make
our communities a better
place for everyone.
