the Canadian west. Engineers led the way and built the railway.
It was one of the great engineering projects of the 19th century.
For Canada, it was iconic... nation-making.
However, no consideration was given to the future impact on
indigenous people. Vast areas of land became the property of
the railroad: Settlers came and became property owners. The
railway was calamitous for indigenous peoples: Their traditional
lands were stolen: Their culture was over-run: Their future was
tragically damaged. An engineering masterpiece caused vast
collateral damage.
The railroad was a technical success - successful manipulation
of physical forces yes... but empty of consciousness...
What does the future hold for us now?
Saturday August 21 was a nice quiet morning. Time to read
the Globe and Mail. I read a small column by Andrew Potter.
" We have lost the ability to solve big problems and meet the big
challenges, and there is every reason to think this is only going
to get worse... "
Shattering commentary on the future... there goes my peaceful
Saturday morning. He cites challenges, for instance Covid 19.
" There is a sharp divide between the incredible scientific work...
and largely ineffectual political and bureaucratic effort to make
use of that work. But even when governments were moved to
action, they found themselves hamstrung by a population riven
by tribalistic responses and magical thinking. "
Potter continues: We are, increasingly, a society unable to
confront and rationally address the problems we face. It wasn't
supposed to turn out this way, since we in the West have for
a long time congratulated ourselves on pretty much having
figured progress out. Manipulation of physical forces, empty of
consciousness...
