" Sustainability " is really a mindset, a
culture, a new way of approaching complex
and systemic problems. Engineers must be
humble enough to reach out to other experts
to learn so they can apply the right science in
their practice. Engineers must integrate their
practice with other types of practitioners,
who may not be engineers, but sociologists,
biologists and foresters, for example.
Dealing with climate change and its
impacts will be a career-long focus of many
of our younger engineers who are in the
earlier stages of their careers, as well as the
engineering students in school now and in
the future. Awareness of climate change, its
impacts on society and engineering should
be taught at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Climate change should be a mandatory
subject covered in undergraduate curriculum
and this should be incorporated as an element
accreditation of engineering programs. PEO
can help by advocating inclusion of climate
change in the accreditation process. It will
help assure that all graduates now and in the
future have an understanding of the issues
and a basic grounding in solutions. It will
require innovation and problem solving
to address climate change issues from an
engineering perspective. Let's make sure
that PEO is engaged and providing guidance
to the licence-holders they regulate so these
practitioners,
in turn, can uphold their

In our view, it is important for OSPE - as the engineers' advocacy body -
to formally endorse adoption of these guidelines by PEO. While PEO must
communicate to their licence-holders any new guidelines or standards they must
follow, OSPE also has a large role to play to support uptake by engineers and build
awareness of why following these guidelines is in the best self-interest of engineers
individually, and will collectively help align us as a profession of leaders.
As engineers who are in the tail end of our careers, our goal is to build awareness
of this issue among all engineers, support the development and use of tools and
encourage development of the required mindset needed in our younger engineers
who will be left to resolve these complex problems.
OSPE's Committees and Task Forces will be hosting a Climate Crisis
consultation in the New Year to present issues they are currently tackling
in regards to climate change, and to hear from the OSPE membership
at large regarding additional areas of focus and collaboration. For more
