ONTARIO ENGINEERING ACADEMY
The first level provides a solid basis in safe workplace
practices including general hazard and risk controls, followed
by more focused attention on electrical and fire hazards, as well
as working from heights. Engineers further in their careers and
leadership journeys can dive a little deeper with the 200-level
certificate. In addition to concentrating on hazard identification,
risk assessment, risk management, and incident investigation,
learners will consider mental health issues in the workplace, as
well as the Professional Engineers' Code of Ethics.
The series culminates in a more in-depth exploration of
these topics, along with codes, standards, and regulations.
This advanced program continues with an examination of how
safety is incorporated into engineering design, and the human
factors that come into play. Participants will consider the role
of engineers and leaders when it comes to making the business
case for workplace safety, and then wrap up with an examination
of case studies, in which participants will apply professional
engineering ethics, to reinforce the learning.

New Offerings in 2022
HONING YOUR EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Emotional intelligence has been a hot topic for a while now, but
have you really considered its impact on your career? Whether
you're an individual contributor or a leader - especially if you're
a leader - your competency in self-awareness, self-regulation,
empathy, and social skills has a significant impact on all your
relationships, both professional and personal. And did you realize
that emotional intelligence is a competency that we can learn and
improve on, just as we do with many other skills?
OSPE has partnered with People in Business to offer Honing
Your Emotional Intelligence, an interactive blended-learning
OEA certificate program. Prior to the course, participants will
complete an EQi assessment that will provide the personal data
they'll use throughout the program, receiving an individual
debrief of their results. Over the course of five weeks, participants

individual contributors, or a combination, depending on your
company's requirements. Your company's organizer will meet
with the instructors beforehand so they can understand your
corporate culture and learn any specific challenges facing your
organization.
RISK MANAGEMENT CERTIFICATE
Risk management
is the identification, assessment, and
management of unknowns. As technical experts, engineers are
expected to not only provide subject matter expertise, but also
identify, manage and/or make recommendations regarding
risks related to the engineering work. These risks can have
either positive or negative impacts, and the global trend for more
complex engineering endeavours increases the importance of
an engineer's ability to provide a coordinated and economical
response.
Continuing our partnership with Darya Duma, P.Eng. and Tim
Dunn, (see profile in The Voice, Winter 2021, p. 23) the OEA is
proud to announce the launch of a new Risk Management course
in Q1 2022. Designed specifically for an engineering audience,
this activity-driven course will build participants' capabilities
in planning, identifying, assessing, and treating risk, by applying
the theory to real-world engineering scenarios.
While this offering is a nice complement to their Project
Engineering workshop, a project management background is not
necessary to get significant value from this course.
