In cooperation with North Bay Mining Week, MIRARCO
Mining Innovation, KWG Resources Inc., and Professional
Engineers Ontario North Bay Chapter, OSPE welcomed a full
room of engineers, industry, First Nations and government
on May 12 in North Bay for a full-day session to discuss the
responsible development of Ontario's north.
Ontario's Ring of Fire represents a $60-billion multigenerational economic opportunity, arguably the world's
most promising mineral development project in more than a
century. However, this potential is shrouded by both technical
and societal challenges, multi-level political decision-making,
dynamic risks, and palpable uncertainty. OSPE's event focused
on coming together to discuss challenges and next steps.
"Engineers are the drivers of new innovation-we reduce
costs, improve efficiency, and find new ways of doing the
impossible," OSPE President & Chair Jonathan Hack, P.Eng.,
said at the event. "As a profession, we understand totallifecycle costing and take seriously the importance of fostering
sustainability. We embrace environmental stewardship, and we
stand on the side of equitable wealth creation - particularly for
First Nations.
Today marks a special opportunity to make a change. Let's
leverage our conversations and connections to make a positive
impact on the future of northern development. As the voice of
Ontario's engineers, know that OSPE is your ally and partner
in realizing that future. We welcome the opportunity to work
together."
OSPE's Ring of Fire working group will now determine its
upcoming activities based on the results and discussions at
Spark the Fire.
