alking into an engineering classroom, office, or
boardroom, it will come as no surprise that women
continue to be underrepresented in engineering. While women
make-up over 50 per cent of Canada's population, they comprise
less than 13 per cent of Professional Engineers and just 20 per
cent of undergraduates enrolled in accredited, engineering
programs in Canada.
In 2006, there were 12,740 female practising professional
engineers in Canada, and by 2016 that number had grown to
26,113. Recognizing that the engineering profession had a long
way to go to reach gender parity, and that a bold initiative was
needed to move the dial, Engineers Canada established their
30 by 30 initiative in 2011. Engineers Canada is the national
organization representing the 12 engineering regulators that
license the country's 290,000 professional engineers.
Their initiative aims to increase the national percentage
of newly licensed women engineers to 30 per cent by the
year 2030. Currently, women represent 17 per cent of this
demographic. 30 per cent was chosen because it is universally
held as the tipping point for sustainable change in the
engineering profession.

OSPE is proud to be one of the Ontario champions for 30
by 30. The initiative has received national support from all
the provincial and territorial regulators, as well as four postsecondary institutions and several interested stakeholders.
To support the organizations championing this initiative,
Engineers Canada published Reaching 30 by 30: Promising
Practices for Increasing Diversity and Inclusion in Engineering.
This guide is a living document of promising practices for
increasing diversity and inclusion in engineering, with an
emphasis on reaching 30 by 30. It is not intended to be a
comprehensive list, but rather a collection of practices that
have delivered positive results. The guide will be updated as new
best practices are identified. Engineers Canada invites anyone
working towards 30 by 30 to share their own initiatives.
As outlined here, OSPE has been using these promising
practices as a launching point for our own 30 by 30
action plan.
