At their first meeting Kevin shared his background in engineering
and how engineers help to impact the community. They discussed
MPP Des Rosiers' portfolio and the tools at her disposal as an MPP
to affect change. Having sent MPP Des Rosier a detailed brief prior
to their meeting, Kevin was able to dive into a highly productive
discussion speaking in detail about labour markets, challenges for
new graduates and women in engineering.
During their second meeting Kevin and MPP Des Rosiers
got down to business. In this meeting they discussed women
in the labour market and the gender bias that still exists within
the profession. They reviewed data and trends that were present
at different skill levels and rates of retainment and promotion at
various career stages. This helped to identify some key areas for
improvement. At this stage MPP Des Rosiers offered to back OSPE's
efforts to support women in engineering by making a Members'
Statement. These statements are entered into the public record as
official government business. Kevin was instrumental in making
this a reality.

On December 4th, 2017 MPP Nathalie Des Rosiers
(Ottawa-Vanier) delivered a statement at Queen's Park
that applauded the many and longstanding initiatives
OSPE and our Women in Engineering Advocacy
Committee (WEAC) have undertaken. These include:
developing a mentorship program, launching "Let's
Break Barriers," supporting Engineers Canada's 30 by
30 campaign and organizing events and communications
pieces that elevate the profile of women in engineering.
Her remarks spoke directly to some of the preliminary
findings from our 2017 survey that we developed for our
"Let's Break Barriers" project. Let me share with you a
few quotes.

A female engineering graduate noted, "Male high school
teachers said they were surprised I was smart.... Male
STEM professors make jokes about how women belong in
the kitchen. My managers credit my ideas to other people,
interrupt my presentations, and when I report harassment,
tell me I need thicker skin if I want to get ahead. Another
woman noted, "There is a bro-culture within many
engineering organizations. I do not want to become a man
to fit in. I want to be myself at work."
You might think that these statements are drawn from an
outdated publication. Sadly, these accounts were pulled
from a 2017 survey that the Ontario Society of Professional
Engineers [prepared]...
OSPE is the voice of the engineering community in Ontario.
Since 2003, its Women in Engineering Advocacy Committee
has been supporting women throughout their engineering
careers. They want to make sure that women in STEM
become a reality... I want to salute their work and also the
people from my riding who approached me to raise the
issue with you.

Kevin Wright, P.Eng. with MPP Des Rosiers.

When asked what this experience has taught Kevin, he replied, "PAN
has shown me how easy it is to get out there and meet with your
government officials - whether that is on a federal or a provincial
level, once it's done you can keep that momentum going, to build
on and expand the conversation."
"If you're someone like me, who wants to make change
and you're not sure what exactly you can do, PAN is a
great place to start. Joining PAN helped me to build those
relationships and make an immediate impact."

OSPE's "Let's Break Barriers" project aims to gather
grassroots perspectives from women in Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)
programs and careers, as well as identify barriers
that contribute to the underrepresentation of women
in STEM. The survey resonated well with the public,
resulting in 3,000 responses from across Canada.
The responses MPP Des Rosiers shared highlight the
need for continued efforts to support and advance
women in the engineering profession - a mission OSPE
is committed to as one of our core values.
