okia Canada creates technologies
that connect the world. Gamechanging innovation takes place at seven
Nokia campuses across the country,
where new devices and platforms
are invented and optimized every
day to transform the way people and
things communicate.
Nokia's Ottawa operation is the
company's largest R&D site in Canada,
with over 2,000 employees. This Kanatabased campus develops customized
solutions for global communications
service providers and the public sector,
along with large enterprises across retail,
mining, transportation and healthcare.
Among the many innovations being
developed at this facility, are new
hardware and software for IP and
Optical Networks, improved broadband
infrastructure and software applications
that analyze data and provide security
protection for subscribers.

a screenshot of the 'new economy'
It's no surprise that we're living in a techdriven, knowledge and service-based
economy. Economic productivity and
growth in the 'new economy' rely on
specialized skills and technical expertise
- more specifically, the kind of expertise
that Information and Communications
Technology (ICT) professionals at
companies like Nokia possess. The
challenge, however, is that the tech
sector, which includes engineers and
engineering graduates, notoriously lags
when it comes to diversity.
The Information and Communications
Technology Council (ICTC) reports that
there is currently a three-to-one ratio of
men to women employed in ICT positions
in Canada. Statistics from Engineers
Canada on university enrollment in
2016, similarly revealed that although
women comprised 19.3 per cent of all
those awarded an undergraduate degree

in engineering, women represented
only 10.1 per cent of those who earned
software engineering degrees and 8.6 per
cent of computer engineering degrees.
Furthermore, women in ICT hold only
18 per cent of executive level positions
in the sector in Canada.
With an estimated 182,000 ICT
positions needing to be filled by
2019, there is a critical need to foster
greater diversity in the ICT sector.
Increasing the percentage of women
and other underrepresented groups
working in hi-tech industries helps
drive innovation. By embracing
new
perspectives,
Canadian
industries can better compete in the
global marketplace.
Nokia recognizes that the key to
enhancing its IP, Optical and Wireless
networks is to invest in the 'network'
of ICT professionals that create the
company's leading-edge technology.
