Carleton University Developing the Next Generation of Problem Solvers
As technological innovations continue to flourish in all
corners of the industry, opportunities for Canada's engineers have arguably never been greater or more diverse
than they are today.
With Ontario quickly emerging as a proving ground
for new technologies such as autonomous vehicles and
5G wireless networks, it's not hard to spot the technical
revolution that is underway throughout the province.
Professor Fred Afagh, Interim Dean of the Faculty
of Engineering and Design at Ottawa's Carleton University, recognizes that sustaining this momentum will
undoubtedly require an influx of talent from a wide
variety of engineering disciplines. With that in mind,
he understands his students will have an increasingly
important role to play as technologies continue to
evolve and integrate.
"The engineering and design professions have long
been engines of economic growth and development,"
explains Dr. Afagh. "That is why our programs continue to expand and adapt to the changing needs of
society, ensuring that our graduates are equipped
with the knowledge and skills that have come to be in
high-demand in today's fast-paced, technology-driven
world."
By heavily integrating experiential learning and
offering a wide array of opportunities for co-operative education, Carleton's Faculty of Engineering and
Design aims to bridge the gap between theory and
application - and in so doing, better prepare its students for rewarding career paths.
In choosing to pursue a co-op designation, Carleton's undergraduates have opportunities to make
real-world impacts before they graduate. This was the
case for a pair of students working with Kanata-based
technology leader DRS Technologies Canada. As part
of their placement, third year software engineering student Shasthra Ranasinghe and computer science major
Kevin Guy helped to develop key software for an allnew deployable flight recorder, which is set to debut
on Airbus A350 XWB jet airliners worldwide in 2019.
"It's been incredible having the chance to work on
a project that's so far-reaching," said Ranasinghe in

Fourth year biomedical and electrical engineering students Maryam Kaka
(left) and Victoria Madge display their Integrated Concussion Assessment
System (I-CAS) mobile application, which aims to migrate clinical
concussion testing and recovery monitoring to the home environment.
