I'd be able to put something like this on my resume before I've
even graduated."
While Carleton's co-op opportunities are not limited to
Ottawa-area employers, Dr. Afagh believes the school's location in the nation's capital does provide students with a unique
advantage.
"Sharing a city with some of the world's best tech companies
and government laboratories offers excellent opportunities for
co-op and internship placements, as well as a high number of
prospects for future employment," he says.
In addition to work placements, students within the Faculty of Engineering and Design engage in hands-on projects
throughout their respective programs, culminating with a
team-based Capstone project in their final year, where they
must produce an original design innovation applying everything they have learned over the course of their studies. While

As a result, recent student innovations have included technologies such as biomedical sensors, web-based medical image processing
software and an integrated concussion assessment system. Additional projects
have focused on serving the community on a broader level, such as developing
storm water management strategies, producing printable radiation detection
devices and creating a smart home energy system capable of monitoring and
adjusting power usage.
"The Faculty of Engineering and Design has long prided itself upon developing solutions with real-world application," notes Dr. Afagh. "In an age driven
by perpetually evolving technologies and systems, our students and researchers
continue to uphold that mindset - looking to anticipate the impending needs
of society as we travel down new roads."
Some projects have even looked beyond issues here in Canada, such as
a multi-year interdisciplinary initiative aimed at addressing chronic water
shortage issues within the rural community of to Longido, Tanzania. Over
the past years students have developed prototypes, including ceramic filters
and small scale solar stills, to bring them to Tanzania for site-specific testing
and integration.
