OSPE - The Voice - March 2018 - 5

message from your president

It was wonderful to be present with so many
Professional Engineers at Queens Park
for the FIRST celebration of Professional
Engineers Day on March 1st.
We were thrilled to have unanimous consent for P.Eng. day from all three political
parties. This represents a significant milestone in Ontario as engineers seek to become
recognized for our achievements - how we contribute to the economic, and the social
agenda in the Province.
Despite this recent success, I remain concerned about the level of engineering
representation in politics and in policy implementation areas of the government. In
Canada's House of Commons, Members with engineering backgrounds hold only 4
per cent of the 338 seats. In Ontario, that percentage is less. At Queen's Park, home
of Ontario's Legislative Assembly, fewer than 2 per cent of Members are professional
engineers and not a single engineer is in the current governing party. In addition, we
have heard from Professional Engineers for the Government of Ontario - that their
ranks have decreased by approximately 40 per cent in recent years.
Why should this be a concern? Because the issues facing Ontario, Canada, and the
world are increasingly complex and technical in nature. As engineers we have a scientific
understanding of the world in which we live - and we are well placed to make policy
recommendations on complex systems related to energy, infrastructure, the environment
and innovation policy.
To improve the wellbeing and prosperity of all Ontarians, it is critical that the
Government of Ontario take a leadership role in supporting and empowering the
engineers to achieve our full potential.
One of my favourite expressions is "a rising tide floats all boats." Investments in
engineering projects, jobs and internships serves to raise the tides for many other
professionals, including skilled trades, architects, labourers and a variety of business
support roles. These have direct links to jobs and investments in a diversity of other
sectors, from finance, to aerospace, to healthcare and beyond. While I am convinced that
we have some of the best engineering talent in the world right here in Ontario - we need
to put that talent to work! A recent OSPE labour market study indicates that over 30%
of engineering graduates are working in jobs that do not even require a post-secondary
education. This needs to change.
Whichever political party forms the next Government of Ontario, provincial
leadership support to the needs of the engineering community must be a central
principle. This provincial leadership should include a commitment to:
* Investment to help engineering talent secure their first job and start and scale
businesses;
* Recognize that engineering represents a strategic competitive advantage and
imperative for Ontario's continued economic prosperity and growth;
* Consult with Ontario's engineering community to ensure that policy decisions reflect
a commitment to evidence-based decision-making and are fully simulated, costed,
and optimally designed before they are enacted.
OSPE is the only engineering association in the province that is mandated to serve
the needs of the entire engineering community, including professional engineers and
all engineering graduates, interns and students. We are passionate about elevating the
public profile of the engineering profession and providing the support that our members,
including women and other under-represented groups, need not only to succeed, but
excel in their careers.

PrESIDENT aND chaIr,
Ontario Society of Professional Engineers

To improve the wellbeing and
prosperity of all Ontarians, it
is critical that the Government
of Ontario plays an increased
leadership role in supporting
and empowering the engineers
to achieve our full potential.
OSPE is taking a leading role in initiating
this conversation. #EngineeringAlly is
getting engineers talking so that together
we can amplify the voice of the profession.
By talking to candidates, members of the
media, and the general public, OSPE will
drive the message that engineering is
needed, for the betterment of Ontario and
the lives of all Ontarians.
#EngineeringAlly is asking the political
candidates from all parties to 'Take
the Pledge' and show their support for
Ontario's engineering community and the
issues we care most about.
As the voice of the engineering
community in Ontario OSPE is engaging
in the provincial election to ensure that
engineers are heard in 2018.
