anniversary of the Pay Equity Act provide
an excellent opportunity to consider how
to strengthen the Act and the work of its
agency, as recommended by the Steering
Committee.
Transferring the equal pay for equal
work provision as it applies to gender
from the Employment Standards Act to
the Pay Equity Act would likely simplify
the regulatory burden on employers and
provide better recourse to employees
by making laws more accessible and
consistent.
Another option for consideration to
improve outcomes for both remedies
would be to require transparency around
employers' actions in meeting their
compensation obligations, and to require
compensation outcomes to be reported
internally to employees and publicly.
The enforcement agency must be
sufficiently resourced with capacity to
support a robust role in advancing equal

pay/pay equity. This was noted by several stakeholders during the Steering Committee's
consultation process.
Over the last two years, the Office has been instrumental in identifying over $12
million in wage adjustments for employees in female job classes. By objectively valuing
work, arranging for wage adjustments and providing workers with the legal protection
they need to seek equitable pay, Ontario's pay equity regime contributes significantly to
achieving equal pay for work of equal value, and could be a vehicle to ensure equal pay
for equal work as well.

On October 28, 2017, OSPE's Women in Engineering Advocacy Committee (WEAC)
will host the 15th Annual Claudette-MacKay Lassonde Fall Forum at The Forth, 629
Danforth Avenue in Toronto, Ontario.
Commissioner Heyninck will deliver a presentation on the gender wage gap. A crosssection of representatives from academia, industry, government and the non-profit
sector will address key issues facing women at all stages of their engineering careers, such
as negative workplace cultures and barriers to advancement, as well as what industry
and other professions are doing to support women and diversity in the workplace. In
addition to a day of active learning, enjoy lunch and plenty of networking opportunities.
For event details, refer to Upcoming Events on page 14. For more information, contact
Catrina Kronfli, Lead, Policy and Government Relations, at ckronfli@ospe.on.ca. We
hope to see you there.
