OSPE - The Voice - September 2017 - 7

viewpoint

When people hear the word
engineering, what do they picture?
The traditional line of thought is the application of math and science to create new
technology and infrastructure, like buildings, roads and waterways. Many picture
teams of engineers working together in laboratories or on job sites, testing, designing
and building the projects and technology that they will continue to maintain and
advance.
But today, realities are more complex, making it ever more apparent that the
definition of engineering is never stagnant. Based on recent conversations within
the engineering community and among key industry, educational and political
stakeholders, it is clear that the profession has been evolving. Ontario is witnessing
changes to not only the engineering curriculum and breadth of courses offered at
post-secondary institutions, but some engineering programs are also introducing
new, more interactive ways of teaching. The Lassonde School of Engineering, for
example, has received full accreditation for its new Electrical Engineering Program,
which will use formats like pre-recorded lectures to promote more class discussion
during traditional lecture periods.
There are new conversations taking place around the topics of diversity, inclusion
and what these terms mean within the context of the engineering profession to ensure
that all perspectives and walks of life are aptly represented. There are new definitions
of engineering leadership and expanded views of ethics, which encourage a proactive
approach to engineering. Likewise, there is a broader perception of engineers as
stewards of technology, driving innovation in areas from Artificial Intelligence (AI),
to the Internet of Things (IoT), to smart cities, while considering the implications of
each for society.
Amidst these evolutions in engineering, what isn't changing? The answer - the
critical role that engineering plays in improving our quality of life and in creating
a more socially just world. These are the overarching principles and objectives of
the engineering profession that have remained constant, however, the engineering
community as a whole, has not done an adequate job highlighting these qualities to
ensure that the value of engineering is not overlooked or misunderstood.
This is where OSPE can help. Building on the success of OSPE's #AnEngineerWasHere
campaign, which highlights all aspects of society that engineering touches, we are
proud to launch our 2017 "Change the World" campaign, which showcases how OSPE
members are changing the world for the better.
The four engineering leaders that you will read about in this issue's feature story
are each doing work that will impact generations to come. Collectively, these members
are conducting land use compatibility studies for large scale developments, developing
and maintaining reliable infrastructure in remote First Nations communities,
championing technology and processes that promote sustainable developments
globally, and protecting the environment and clean water supplies through careful
water management of wetlands and rivers. And these examples only scratch the surface!
OSPE has always been proud of its members because as engineers, they have
embraced an ethical responsibility to create a better world not only through their
daily work, but also through their support of OSPE. We want to make sure that our
members have access to the supports, resources and platforms they need to share their
expertise and to make a difference. On top of professional development, networking
opportunities and catered resources, you can count on OSPE to tell your stories. Share
your work with us, and we'll share it with the province and the world. Together, we
can create a new image of the "Complete Engineer".
