President’s Message 3 Inquiring minds Tomorrow’s scientists explore the world at Ryerson By Sheldon Levy hat comes to mind when you think of science at Ryerson? It is interactions with award-winning faculty, who are our teachers and researchers, graduate and undergraduate supervisors, and inspiring mentors. It is a learning environment that offers exceptional classroom and lab experiences, and increasing academic distinction. It is close connections with the world outside the university, with opportunities for partnered projects and work terms, and a strong tradition of education that leads to professional careers. It is adriana Cesnik, applied Chemistry and Biology ’01, who followed up microbiology at Ryerson with dentistry at the University of Toronto – and Jerry Chao, who chose Ryerson to do his master’s degree in molecular science after graduating from the University of Toronto, and now works in research at Environment Canada. It is salma al-Karmi, applied Chemistry and Biology ’07, molecular science (msc) ’09, who came to Ryerson from the U.K. and is now pursuing a PhD in chemistry at McMaster University – and margaret de Jesus, applied Chemistry and Biology ’00, who earned her MPhil from the University of Teesside, U.K., and went on to teach biology at the Ontario Science Centre School. It is Otini Kroukamp, an international PhD student from South Africa who is working on ways to control microbes in food processing in real time – and postdoctoral fellows from all over the world competing for Ryerson research positions and invigorating our academic culture. It is saif al-alul, Chemistry ’10, working with both Image Arts and Chemistry to help W preserve photographic history by advancing an electrochemical method to clean daguerreotypes – and graduate and undergraduate students in mathematics performing industry-funded research, from financial applications to software testing using discrete mathematics. In the Digital Media Zone, it is Damyan Petkov (second-year computer science) focusing on building a communications server on top of the RIM Blackberry Enterprise Server – and an ingenious idea from graduate student srdjan Lakovic, Computer science ’09, to track a user’s movements, meetings and topics of discussion and, at the end of the day, send them a comic strip of their daily life. When I asked Chris Evans, associate dean, undergraduate science programs, to help me compile this list, the response was immediate and overwhelming. These are just a few examples of a growing focus at your university. As our alumni, you are a wonderful part of the developing Ryerson story that just keeps getting stronger.
