Ryerson Alumni - Summer 2012 - (Page 3)

President’s meSSAGe STEVE BROOKS, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO Aaron Best (centre) scored a game-high 26 points as Ryerson Rams dominated Lakehead Thunderwolves 86 to 70 in the OUA semifinals. Watching history unfold BY SHELDON LEVY O n a Saturday night in late February, more than 900 fans filled the Kerr Hall gym to watch the Rams basketball team win a heart-stopping 74-71 game to make the semifinals. It was the last varsity game to be played in the gym, and the crowd witnessed, as a Ryerson sportswriter said, “the magical end to a facility that has hosted intercollegiate sport for over 60 years.” We are proud to recognize great moments in history. Recently, the Ryerson Theatre School celebrated its 40th anniversary of leadership in theatre education in North America. Our Tri-Mentoring Program also marked a decade of distinction supporting our culturally diverse student body, one of only two programs of this kind in Canada. In Calgary, at the national Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race, the Ryerson team made university history winning first place overall, fastest run time, top speed, best performing toboggan, most original and innovative design, and the Holcim Award for sustainable toboggan. At the Academy Awards, Ryerson took home an Oscar with alumnus Michael Lewis, Aerospace Engineering ’87, Mechanical Technology ’88, and his team winning in the Science and Technology category. This coming fall, students will be entering our new Faculty of Science for the first time. After that last game in Kerr Hall, our Rams basketball team made it all the way to the CIS National Championships for the first time since 1999. The 2012-13 season is already being anticipated by everyone, because it will build on this year’s amazing performance and because of the building where Ryerson teams will play. The opening of the Mattamy Athletic Centre at the Gardens is history being celebrated — and history in the making. Most of all, it is your history. I invite you to be in touch and stay connected, and I look forward to working with the alumni association to find many ways to welcome you home. n SUMMER 2012 • ryerson university Magazine 3
