“the most exciting part for me was not knowing what i was going to find next. it was a total jumble, and nobody knew what was there. not even his son.” — saRa manco, pHoto pReseRVation and collection management (ma) ’12 to face 300,000 photographs,” she says. “But we’re making it fun, interactive and at the same time, it’s smart and makes you think.” A complementary exhibition will examine human wrongs of more recent history, through a video installation on the Rwandan genocide by Alfredo Jaar: We Wish to Inform You That We Didn’t Know. At the entrance, the media wall will feature the unfamous from the Black Star Collection: the regular folk – soldiers, farmers and children – caught by the camera and thus captured in a historical moment. It is also incorporating images of unfamous visitors to the centre by inviting guests to contribute their own photographs, which will be added to the display. Back in the vault, the RIC’s inner sanctum, a staff member dashes past Higdon, gathering photographs for an upcoming exhibit. After spending so many years as the sole staff member of the collection, Higdon savours the energy of students and professional staff buzzing around him. Finally, Ryerson has a proper facility to preserve the photographs it’s been amassing for so many years. As Higdon is retiring next year, it’s gratifying to see his life’s work lead toward such a crescendo. Meanwhile, Sara Manco’s career has taken her to Washington, D.C., where she works in photo services at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art and also assists a photographer with her professional archive. Others from her program are working at the International Centre for Photography in New York, the New York Museum of Modern Art, George Eastman House, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the RIC. New students and academic researchers are delving into Ryerson’s photography collection and archives, artists are planning exhibits, an acquisition committee is deciding on additions to the ever-expanding collection and passers-by admire the luminous architecture housing it all. The illuminated glass-box structure is an apt symbol for a centre that’s giving the art of the darkened chamber – the camera obscura – new life. n CaRolyn MoRRis is a wRiteR based in toRonto.
