This time though, it’s not Keon he’s cheering on, but his daughter. Michelle Evagelou, 18, plays leftwing on the Ryerson Rams’ women’s hockey team. Tonight is the team’s home opener. “If someone had told me [years ago] that I’d be here to watch my daughter play, I never would have thought it was possible,” he says. restoring history He’s likely not alone. When the Gardens shut down in 1999, few could have predicted the fate of the storied building. But thanks to Ryerson’s re-opening of the arena in September 2012, the Gardens has been given new life. Evagelou’s daughter is proud to be part of it. “It’s really cool. I’m a huge Leafs fan, so for me, it’s a huge honour. I mean, they last won the [Stanley] Cup in this building,” Michelle says. The first-year economics and finance student chose Ryerson based on a combination of academics and the chance to play in the state-of-the-art facility. “That was a huge influence on me,” she says. With a full-sized rink that holds 2,600 fans, a multi-purpose basketball and volleyball court, and a studio, the MAC is now home to varsity athletes on six of Ryerson’s CIS men’s and women’s teams, including hockey, basketball and volleyball. The university’s official dance team, the Ryerson Dance Pak, also practices and performs in the MAC studio and gym. The school’s figure skaters, too, get a share of ice time, and intramural sports are also held in the facility. Plus, all students and community members have the chance to work out in the building’s new, high-performance fitness centre.
