A management consultant, she was also a volunteer who helped women in labour. One day at work, she was suddenly paged to go to a home birth. “I changed out of my designer wool suit and went to a birth,” Tecson says. After the successful delivery, she hurried back to the office and right into a corporate boardroom. “In the meeting, they were talking about deliverables,” she says. “I couldn’t get over the fact that I had just been to a birth and seen a real deliverable that fundamentally changed a family’s life, and these guys were talking about a number on a spreadsheet!” At that moment, Tecson knew she had to follow her passion toward a new career. She enrolled in Ryerson’s four-and-ahalf-year midwifery program, graduated in 2007 and has dedicated herself to the profession, joining almost 600 registered midwives in Ontario. Now a midwife with Sages-Femmes Rouge Valley Midwives, her duties as a primary care provider include clinical management and support during pregnancy, birth and postpartum and following mothers and their babies through the first six weeks. While Tecson finds herself on call for weeks at a time, juggling the schedules of up to eight clients at once, her passion never wanes. In fact, she continues to give more to the profession as a regional representative for the Association of Ontario Midwives (AOM).Tecson’s goal is to work with AOM to improve access to midwifery services. According to Tescon, only four out of 10 women in Ontario who want a midwife have access to one. “It’s not just about the birth,” she says. “It’s about sharing a woman’s journey.” n gaRy RUsaK is a wRiteR based in toRonto. 28 Ryerson University Magazine • WINTER 2013
