The event has become a must-attend for much of the GTA’s planning and development industry and the RPA looks forward to further strengthening those industry ties to benefit alumni and current students. The winners of the 2013 RPA Student Awards will also be announced at this year’s event. I’ll never forget when a group from our school of Image arts first went to view the black star collection, after Ryerson had been invited to receive it as the largest gift of cultural property ever given to a canadian university. They were very excited when they came back, asking to see me right away. The group had taken nearly 500 photographs of the collection. I was astounded as I looked at the images – they brought to life the history of the 20th century – Marilyn Monroe, John F. Kennedy, Muhammad ali, the Warsaw ghetto, the civil Rights movement, the wars, the leaders and so much more. one of my favourite images is the portrait of Martin luther King Jr. with his child, not only because I’m a great admirer of King and what he achieved, but also because of the quality of the photo, the composition, the lighting and – as a grandfather – the poignancy of such a powerful image of father and son. as part of the iconic collection, this photo is housed at the Ryerson Image centre which opened in september. While our anonymous donor provided the collection and support towards building the RIc, private donations are an essential part of its existence and ongoing success. beyond bricks and mortar, donors contribute to the RIc’s educational programs, teaching and research activities, and acquisitions projects — all critical elements of a thriving public gallery. We’re deeply grateful to our supporters for helping bring the RIc to life. These gifts are an important part of the university’s $200-million Make your Mark campaign. I encourage all Ryerson alumni, community members and Torontonians to visit this incredible collection in the heart of Ryerson’s campus. n RadIo aNd TElEVIsIoN aRTs aluMNI assocIaTIoN (RTaaa) New Wall of Fame Established 60 years ago as the School of Radio and Television Arts, the RTA School of Media is Canada's pre-eminent school of media production and broadcasting. Over recent years, the school has experienced a significant transformation, including new faculty, new programs and a new name to ensure it continues in its leadership role. The school has forged closer ties to the media industry while enhancing its research and leadership role. One big shift for RTA is its outreach to alumni. With a newly formed RTA Alumni Association headed by Donna Buczkowski, RTA is connecting with its wide network of proud members. This September, RTA announced a new RTA Wall of Fame to honour some of RTA's leading success stories. The first 12, honoured last fall, were chosen through a nomination and committee process. RyERsoN RETaIl aluMNI assocIaTIoN (RRaa) Our annual general meeting featured retail branding and marketing consultant Joanne Balles. In her presentation, The Big Retail Trends: 1 Click, 1 Brick, Balles addressed the importance of selling the retail experience, social e-commerce and the industry’s need for new inventors. The RRAA is currently working with the Ted Rogers School of Retail Management on an alumni mentorship program to complement the fourth-year internship class. We are seeking alumni volunteers to share their experiences and insights with graduating students.
