imogen coe is the first dean of the new faculty of science at ryerson university. internationally recognized for her pioneering research in membrane protein cell biology and biochemistry, coe brings to ryerson an impressive research agenda and leadership practice that will guide the university’s newest faculty. the faculty of science began offering courses in september 2012. Programs are offered by the four founding departments – chemistry and biology, computer science, Mathematics and Physics. the faculty also has three new Phds in Molecular science, computer science and biomedical Physics, in addition to the current undergraduate and graduate programs. throughout her 15-year career in academia, coe has been a strong independent voice for science. she has a Phd in biology from the university of Victoria, an Msc from the university of Victoria and a bachelor’s degree from exeter university in the u.k. she is committed to student experiential learning through participation in research projects, having supervised more than 30 graduate and undergraduate students to date. coe is an advocate of girls and women in science and is active in promoting and highlighting the importance and relevance of science to her local community. The heart of office life Professor Nina Cole, a human resources management expert in the Ted Rogers School of Management, tells Canadian Business that her research shows attitudes towards office romances have changed. Young people in particular “don’t think it’s a big deal at all,” she says. Studies suggest that finding love in the workplace can help the people involved by increasing morale and motivation. The business of art Imogen Coe is dean of the new Faculty of Science. rtistic spirits with a mind for business can now blend their two interests in one undergraduate program offered at Ryerson in fall 2013. Creative Industries, a new interdisciplinary program in the Faculty of Communication & Design (FCAD), is the first of its kind in Canada. “Design, entertainment, media and the arts are all drivers of the digital economy with growing wealth production and employment opportunities,” said Ira Levine, founding director of the Creative Industries program. “Creative Industries teaches our students the skills to build upon their passion.” The program incorporates creative-content modules, which are packages of six courses each selected from fields such as film, publishing, fashion, broadcasting and curatorial practices and delivered by all of FCAD’s eight professional schools, together with a business module of six courses designed and delivered by the Ted Rogers School of Management. Students will graduate with a bachelor of arts with a specialization in business and will be well-positioned to pursue careers in exhibition, production, promotion, distribution, project development, programming, communication or management.
