Your Stories

One of the best parts about this year’s Double Anniversary has been the memories that alumni have shared. Here’s just a selection; read more online at ryerson.ca/double-anniversary.

Favourite tradition

“The island picnic. I remember as a frosh, I was commanded to push a bed on wheels from Gould Street to the ferry docs. When that didn’t kill me and my fellow freshmen, I was informed by the bed commander (who I later discovered was a javelin-throwing champion who could have pushed us all on the bed) that she and her fellow passengers were also frosh. We almost died laughing. After the shock wore off.”

—Dale Goldhawk, Journalism ’67

Favourite hangouts

“Hmm, to hangout? By Lake Devo. To study? In the Library. To eat? Lou Dawgs, of course! To socialize? Usually catching a movie at AMC, exploring new neighbourhoods or trying one of the many eateries downtown!”
—Raina Abesteh, Global Management ’15

“Ryerson’s Aboriginal Student Services has space in Kerr Hall West where I spend a lot of my time. There’s comfortable seating, computers and a printer, a kitchen that's always stocked, and we can smudge in the space. There's something about being with other Indigenous students that puts you at ease — you can commiserate when times are tough but also laugh. It's such a supportive environment, like a family. When you're far from home and in an urban place like Toronto, that's key.”

—Riley Kucheran, Communications and Culture (MA) ’17

Ryerson connection

“I met my husband Amirkianoosh Kiani when I was doing my PhD studies. At the time, we were both PhD students. Meeting him is one of the best things that happened to me during my school years at Ryerson.”
—Mehrnaz Shokrollahi, Electrical & Computer Engineering (PhD) ’15

“I met two of my best friends in the whole world at Ryerson, Rosemary Reid and Marsha Lederman. We quickly became a foursome joined by Kevin Ormsby, a friend I'd known since childhood. We hosted regular dinners at each other's homes, bonding us as a group. Spouses/partners were not invited because we had far too much to talk about! Those dinners continued for decades.”
—Shannon Robertson, Radio and Television Arts ’88

At orientation I met another international student Kgomotso Sima from Botswana. Over the next four years she provided inspiration and support. She is a high achiever and challenged me to be a better student.

A favourite prof

Myer Siemiatycki and Arthur Ross were two of my favourite teachers. We had many lively discussions on Canadian politics and we have stayed in touch over the years.
