Walter Pitman
Former Ryerson President
Walter died in June 2018, aged 89. His obituary stated, “Walter Pitman began his career as a dedicated high school history teacher at Kenner Collegiate in Peterborough, quickly becoming the head of the history department at Langstaff Secondary School in Richmond Hill. In 1960 he made history by becoming the first New Democratic Party Member of Parliament for Peterborough. In 1967, he was elected as a member of the Ontario Legislature for the NDP and, in 1970, became deputy leader of the Ontario NDP. He returned to education where he eventually was offered the presidency of Ryerson Polytechnic Institute. He immediately brought his penthouse office down to the ground floor in order to make it more accessible to students. Pitman Hall was named after Walter and his wife Ida.”

William Roebuck
Journalism ’71
William passed away peacefully in Burlington, on Nov. 12, 2017, at age 70. After graduating from Ryerson, he had a successful career as a magazine editor and writer in the fields of electrical engineering, food service and hospitality, personal computing, and technology. He was best known as the award-winning editor of MRO and Home Digest magazines. He will also be remembered as the “car guy” – owner/editor of cartest.ca.

James Woods
RTA ’78
James (Jim) died April 22, 2018, at age 62, following a courageous battle with cancer. He spent 26 years teaching in Chatham-Kent.
